Flock And Fiber Festival Canby 2014

Yesterday, I met for the first time, one of my favorite Oregon bloggers, Teresa Kasner.
She writes over Corbett way with stunning views of Mt. Hood, Crown Point & Multnomah Falls - where she does volunteer work every week.
She is a gorgeous photographer and showcases a lot of iconic Oregon scenery.

She made some crocheted bunting that I just love. She used it on her annual family camping trip and it made the canopy very bright and happy.
She has shown Multnomah Falls in all seasons. This one is from last Fall.
She also likes to photograph flowers which I enjoy seeing.

She treks over to Canbyland for the Flock & Fiber Festival most years and I suggested we meet up.

The Flock & Fiber Festival is all about flocks of sheep, goats, alpacas, etc and their fiber.
How to spin it, dye it, knit it, crochet it, felt it.

Felted purses. I liked the felted 'leaf' flap with the burn outs.

Teresa coveted these baskets.

While I need to pull out my felting supplies and do some needle felting.

For the Bunting Queen, Benta,  over in the UK - apparently this trend has made it's way to Oregon. Quite a few booths featured bunting for decoration.

Vendors were selling wool, roving, felted creations, knitting paraphernalia - stitch markers, hand-turned needles - anything to do with sheeps, goats, rabbits, alpacas and llamas.

The Spinners were set up outside where the sun finally broke through the clouds and people in their wool jumpers suddenly got hot.

I rather liked the dude on the right with his hair-do.

Teresa brought her husband and two grand kids along. Her husband used to raise goats and told a few stories about how they get the horns off while still babies. These goats with the horns escaped that.
Her husband also flew helicopters in the Vietnam war and afterwards on the oil rigs and I enjoyed those stories too.

It was fun to watch the boys with the goats and alpacas. I miss having small children around.

These boys reached right in to pet these goats and alpacas.

This is for my bloggy friend Gene Black. The denim strips were woven along with some shiny silver  mylar and yellow ribbon to create this large shawl.

The Flock & Fiber Festival is a free event that comes to Canby each September at the fairgrounds. You can register for classes online or just come and watch the animal judging and vendor booths.
People come from far and wide with their creations to show off and talk to fellow fiber artists.

The spinner below in the video was telling me about the "2:00 pm   Spinner’s Triathlon Competition – Central Lawn" on Sunday.

I've always gone on Saturday after work but next year, I think I'll make time for the Spinner's Triathlon - a fun way to show off your spinning talents.

If you've ever wanted to spin fiber into yarn....

Canby Master Gardener Plant Sale

I helped a friend set up her booth for this show on Friday - between drenching rain showers and tiny sun breaks.
The Spring Garden Fair features free pH soil testing, luscious plants, and decorative garden art.
Held in conjunction with OSU extension services, you can bring all of your garden quandaries in to be answered.

Saturday & Sunday, May 5 & 6th, 2012
at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds in Canby, Oregon.

I get to preview what kind  of plants are coming in by helping set up. Total plant lust.

Plucky Maidens

Lavender Hill Cottage
oregon city, oregon

This last weekend of April showcases several fun venues to buy plants and vintage re-purposed goods.
My friends from Lavender Hill Cottage in Oregon City will be at the Plucky Maiden's Junk Fest along with 75 - 100 other vendors in Portland.  It's at the Columbia Conference Center on 85th and NE Columbia by the Portland Airport. Lots of fun items to look through Friday & Saturday.

During the week is the Canby High School's Plant Sale where you can score big deals on your garden plants. Often only 50 cents to a dollar per plant, I will stock up on Tomato starts as well as geranium, fuchsia & other flowers. Hanging Baskets available too (think Mother's Day?). The CHS students provide and plant the big baskets around town.

Also this weekend is the RiteAid Distribution Center Plant Sale with proceeds going to Doernbecher's Children Hospital. Fundraiser held on Friday and Saturday with plants donated by 60 area nurseries. Apparently Miss Oregon will be signing autographs on Friday afternoon. Best prices are Saturday afternoon when things start winding down.

An Everlasting Day

I had a day yesterday that just worked out. Serendipitously. We were having a family get-together this weekend so the OSU son needed to get back to Canby. His ride fell through, so I offered to pick him up after my work shift Saturday morning. While we were deciding this, my blogging pal from Japan was here visiting her family in Amity and she said her folks were having a garage sale and I should stop by. Which was just off of 99W. Cool, we can do that.
On the way there, my sister called and said they were headed to the new Evergreen Waterpark in McMinnville - which is also just off of 99W (hwy18).
My blogging pal offered up Boersma's fabric store which was having a fabric sale and I confess, my ears really perked up- especially since I was not dressed to swim. At the waterpark, price signs were discreetly tucked away- the old adage - if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it. So I left for an hour and spent my waterpark admission at Boersma's instead.

My daughter found two tickets to the Timber's game off of Craig's list and she and my sister went there and I took the boys back home via Champoeg to find dinner in Canbyland and then off to the fair we went.

First up - video of Sinbad:

A very impressive outdoor collection since I was here last.

Everything in the waterpark revolves around a theme: airplanes!

See - no signage regarding "The Price Of Admission"

TWO STORIES of fabrics. Basement fabric sale through the end of August $1.00 off per yard. Free admission.

And then - on to the Clackamas County Fair.

Octopus

A few years back my son and I were the last to board the Octopus, late enough that the operator forgot about us when he unloaded the other passengers. So - we went a second time, around, and around, twirling up & down at the same time. We did not hurl but the college-age kids who also got a second ride - one of them did. A proud moment for us but I haven't been on a carnival ride since. . .

Until this one. We had enough tickets for four rides. With four of us ( and a desire to stave off long day+sibling rivalry), I agreed to go on the ZERO GRAVITY.
---Just a caution - take your hair clips out first.

Begs the question- if I can't touch them - how old are they?

Flock and Fiber Festival

It's this weekend!
I've been to the Flock & Fiber Festival several times now and there is always something different as well as the same. It's held at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds in Canby.
Here's the schedule.
Some borrowed photos from Julie Lawson.

If you knit, crochet, felt or just create- this is a hands-on festival from the people who raise the animals.

See the beginning product make its way into the dye vats, the spinning wheel, into a gorgeous rug, or a stunning sweater.
Animal judging, cook-offs, and classes are all part of the fun.

Men Who Stare At Goats.

We are proud to announce the arrival of our new movie theater in Canbyland.
Weighing in at 8 screens, the new movie place is a gem.

We saw this movie.
Our review? Hysterically funny in places. George Clooney was a great straight man. Won't tell you about the ending. Overall - good Sunday afternoon matinee.
